THE RUMOUR MILL

15 Jan

I have a friend who is terribly affected by what people think about her. I keep telling her that she really shouldn’t care, as she has her great and loyal friends, and I don’t think she should seek approval from those people who may pass judgement for what ever reason.

The fact is that you really can’t please everyone, and what I’ve learnt is that if people talk about you behind your back, it usually comes down to jealousy anyway.

Of course we are all different, and saying that you shouldn’t care about what other people think is easier said than done. I think I’m lucky as I really am not affected by things like that. I grew up in a small place in Helsinki where rumours were always flying around about everyone. When it came to me, it was anything from me sleeping with a friend’s boyfriend to having a boob job – neither of which were even remotely true! (Although I wish the latter was, as especially after having 3 kids, I could do with a bit of a lift…)

After moving from this small place in Finland to London and living there for 12 years, I’m now back living in a small town, where I’m sure rumours are yet again ‘ripe.’ But do I care? No. Some of the things I’ve heard are so far from the truth that it makes me laugh. Do I want to correct these people? No. Let them talk so that they have something to entertain themselves with!
